Valentine’s Day History

Ancient Roman Festival

The ancient Romans celebrated the first day of spring on February 15th.  They held festivals with food, music, dance, and racing.  Girls put their names on slips of paper and placed them in a bowl.  Boys drew the name of a girl and they would be playmates for the festival.  Sometimes they fell in love!

Saint Valentine in Ancient Rome

The ancient Romans were great warriors.  All boys trained to be soldiers and served in the army.  Emperor Claudius II wanted his soldiers to focus on winning battles.  He worried that married men thought too much about their wives and families.  So, Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men!

A Catholic priest named Valentine lived in Rome at this same time.  Some people believed that Valentine secretly married young couples in love.  Emperor Claudius arrested Valentine and had him put to death on February 14.

Two hundred years later the Roman civilization became weak and the Catholic church became powerful.  The Catholics wanted the Romans to give up their Roman gods.  Pope Gelesius I changed the Roman spring festival.  He made a new festival to honor the brave priest named Valentine.  The Pope made February 14 St. Valentine’s Day.
